Why would tanks defend b4 militia in city?

Ok in casual game
some dummy joins right where im attacking that turn
so i take Athens-but now no reinforcements available
obvious sky menace guy in italy-i figure he will attack Athens
my 8 or 10 tanks are there plus the 8 militia-i transport in 7 infantry-5 anti-air-some more militia

i held but wtf-tanks are dead(infantry and anti-air also) but militia survived and they are classified as defense

why?

Is it a map with standard units? Maybe there were anti-tank units, they will go after the tanks first.

Sometimes game gets bugged and a defensive battle is counted as a att/def battle or you were blitzkrieg.As blitz,tanks and militia have same defense.In that case units with higher attack defend first.

I think it's mainly due to Tanks having 5 Crit compared to none for Milli, which makes Tanks better than milli in defense in None (Both 4 Def).

just seems flawed that the militia dont do their job as cannon fodder 1st to protect more expensive troops

Don't use blitz Turk when there is an Italy enemy. Actually don't use blitz turk unless you're rushing Ukraine at RC and you're being funded by allies.
