I've been running on a run of the mill HP laptop for a while now and I'm considering getting myself a desktop. I want something powerful and good for gaming and whatnot. I'm pretty good with the basics of computers but I could use the help haha. What brands do you guys recommend? What features should I look for? What's it all gonna cost me? I know I'm being kinda vague about what I want but just let me know what you think thanks

Build one yourself. Or get ones that are custom-built from small time dealers, preferably with no operating system installed, as buying Windows separately (there are always offers) or getting Linux for free (but no AW in this case) is always cheaper. Look up 'gaming pc' on eBay. Only buy from trusted dealers. The prices are ridiculously low for pre-built computers. Building your own will always be far more cost effective though and it can save you a good $100 Canadian.

Alienware computers I've heard are pretty good for gaming, but I've heard they're quite expensive. :u Honestly, if I had the time and patience, I'd probably just build my own computer and get all the really awesome parts to make a super computer for less than what it'd cost to buy the computer.

Building my own is appealing from a cost point of view and I know what all the parts of a computer do but when it comes to the actual physical assembly process I'm completely lost. I'll try to look into the local computer shops though. Thanks for the suggestion

Trust me, it's not hard at all--I have a friend far less geeky than me who has pulled it off. That makes it sound as if it's an achievement--but it really isn't, it just needs a bit of manual labour. The most daunting part is choosing all the components that go in.I'd highly recommend a processor with an Intel Ivy Bridge chip. The link points to an early one which will play your games comfortably for some 5 years to come at the very least. This guide has everything you need. Enjoy. And try out Linux on your new OS-less machine, it's worth it. I'd suggest Ubuntu, openSUSE (DVD edition, put KDE on it) and Kubuntu as some distros to try. I'm currently using the first of the lot as I prefer the Unity desktop it boasts, but if I had a more powerful computer I would probably use KDE, just for the apps (like the Amarok music player and the Kate text editor). You can of course try it on your current computer, and it will have a lot more eye-candy than Windows and still run faster, as the code is structured far, far more efficiently!

Yeah so far what I'd like is the Intel Ivy Bridge i7-3770k, 8gigs of RAM, at least 4 USB ports and a 1 terabyte hardrive. For graphics card I'd probably go with an NVIDIA geforce gtx 560 or something of the sort. As for case I have no clue. The motherboard is where I become completely clueless though haha.

Some points: 1. Go back to 4kanker, please. 2. I generally don't buy software and avoid using proprietary (closed-source) software where possible, but Windows is more or less broken and likely to be filled with spyware and rootkits if you get it from... sources of questionably integrity. Gizmo's Freeware (amazing website) and alternativeTo are your friends, use them wisely. 3. I know man, Microsoft is still set in its 32-bit ways and still sports the horribly shitty NTFS file system. It's over 15 years old now, which is like 115 in this industry.

I recommend HPs NEVER EVER BUY a gateway or a Dell Macs are good, but they are overpriced and you can't upgrade them easily. Macs simply look sexier thats about it BUT the best option is to build it yourself
