It's not particularly hard being a programmer. I'd say the difficult bit is to make the first step and to learn the fundamentals. Then after 3-4 years, it's relatively easy to keep on top of things. Self-taught. I am on Reddit, yes (for better or worse!)

To Ivan and Amok, Have you guys ever considered making a weather engine for the game, for example, the cold in Siberia would negatively effect invading units that were improperly prepared?

From the very beginning, our main goal was to make this game as unobtrusive as possible. Basically, keeping the gameplay simple and deep at the same time. Think chess. Weather engine and things like mountains, resources, etc. would just add unnecessary complexity to the game.

We really wanted to make a game. Since neither of us had much experience with making games, we decided to make something simple and fairly static, like a world domination game. Of course, "simple" quickly gave way to more ambitious ideas, like free unit movement, highly detailed looping world map, complex battle mechanics and so on. We learned in the process and the game was improving together with our skills. And here we are, 5 years later, still learning and still improving

The question you should be asking is "does it really matter?" I'm fairly certain I can pass Turing test, and since it's unlikely that we ever meet in person, it should make no difference to you whether I'm human or machine. Apart from simple curiosity,of course, which is what you're probably going for. However, if I was AI, I would probably be powerful enough to not suck so terribly at the game I myself have created

Having negative values might cause unforeseen problems, so we'd prefer to avoid it. However, I have this idea for adding city buildings/upgrades - hopefully one day I'll be able to work on it.

At first, consistently having a few running games and at least 20 people online was a dream. Later, it became 100 people. As our appetites grow, the next goal is 1000 Yes, it has lived up to our expectations - and some. For us it was somewhat of an experiment, to see how far two guys can take an indie game like that.

We used to advertise with Google, Facebook and YouTube - none of it was particularly effective. Basically, the problem is we don't retain enough casual visitors, and few of those who stay spend any money on the game. No money earned = no advertisement. Brendon is on leave until HTML5 is finished (as there's not much he can do until then), but probably won't return. He's a highly skilled specialist and quite a bit above our modest profile.

Elo system has it's flaws too... can be farmed although at a slower rate than cw points and can be amassed, which is always problematic when people stop cwing since there's a limit of cws for every season.

Yes, we are planning to switch to Elo system for CW, starting from next season. There will be one overall rating (as currently with duels), and one that resets to 1000 every season and will be used to determine season standings. Seasonal Elo will be added for duels as well.

My family is what I value the most. We want the game to be more popular (duh!) and an exciting bug-free experience for players. Everyone has their own pet ideas for the game, so we obviously have to do a lot of filtering. This makes some players unhappy and they start thinking that we don't care about the game, since we don't implement their ideas. We do care though.

The server is actually working quite fine, but there are some problems with connection (we only have one server, in The Netherlands, so for example the US doesn't have a dedicated server) and the DDoS protection service (which sometimes filters/blocks connections). Also, we have DDoS attacks themselves, probably coming from some former butthurt players...

I don't recall this ever happening. We had some controversial features (like the changes in the battle mechanics and turn-blocking), but I'd say we had a majority support in everything. If we ever introduce something horribly unpopular, we would probably roll it back after a trial period.
