I'm not entire certain how HP works. I've noticed that, as I send Units into battle after battle after battle, they end up dying, even against vastly inferior units. I know that HP greatly boosts fighting power, and that it allows for attrition to be a factor for individual units. So, how does HP work, exactly, outside of that? Can it regenerate? If it does regenerate how long does it take? How does the attack power : defense power ratio work to take down HP?

HP is regenerated after every battle.

The default units (those in default map) have all 7 HP unless you:

1. Have militias in general stack with "General: Ground Secondary Defense" upgrade. There your militias earn +1 HP (8 hp in total).

2. Playing IronFist strategy (+2 HP to all units)

3. Playing Great Combinator (+1 HP to both inf and Tanks)

4. There is also a Safe Transportation upgrade that add +2 HP to transports.

When you attack, your enemy defend. Both deal a damage which is reduced from your units's HP. When one unit lose all the health points, it dies.

Quick description:
HP is simply the amount of damage a unit can take before it is destroyed. As far as I know, this is how it works:
Example Battle:
Let's say 2 tanks (which have 7 HP) attack 2 infantry (which have 7 HP)

The defending infantry deals 5 damage to an attacking tank (which will now have 2 HP remaining (7 HP - 5 Damage = 2 HP)) and the attacking tank deal 6 damage to the defending infantry (Which will now have 1 HP remaining (7 HP - 6 Damage = 1 HP)).

The same defending infantry deals 4 Damage to the same attacking tank (which will now have 0 HP and be destroyed (2 HP - 4 Damage = 0 HP)) and the same attacking tank deals 3 damage to the same defending infantry (which will now have 0 HP and be destroyed (1 HP - 3 Damage = 0 HP)).

The second defending infantry now does 3 Damage to the second attacking tank (which will now have 4 HP remaining (7 HP - 3 Damage = 4 HP)) and the second attacking tank deals 8 Damage to the second defending infantry (which will now have 0 HP and be Destroyed (7 HP - 8 Damage = 0 HP)).

Both defending infantry died, so the tanks win.

Also, as far as I know, all surviving units regain full HP after each battle. So the surviving tank from the example battle will once again have 7 HP after the battle.
Hope this helps.

EDIT: darn you clovis, beat me to it

Great, now I need to figure out why my transports get killed in battles when they have way more health than my infantry :/

Thanks, guys, I'm a little ashamed I hadn't figured this out after several years' worth of playing this game.

Because their att/def sucks.
A naval transport (without upgrades has 1/2 att/def and 7 HP) . Now a destroyer with 9/7 att/def and 7 HP attacks the naval transport and the Battle goes like this:
The defending transport deals 2 damage to the destroyer which now has 7-2=5 HP. The destroyer in turn deals 9 damage to the transport which is then destroyed (7-9= -2HP*)
*Note: -2HP is going by pure maths and I doubt the game mechanism actually takes it into account instead reading it as 0
———
With a bomber, 6/6 att/def and 7HP, it works pretty much the same way, except the bomber has to attack twice: (1) 7-6=1 and (2) 1-6= -5; at the end of which the bomber has 2 HP: (1) 6-2=4 and (2) 4-2=2

You don't really care about the attack of a transport... I don't think you'll ever think of them as an offensive unit XD what matters is their defense.

A naval transport (without upgrades has 1/2 att/def and 7 HP) .

2 def isn't much but remember that NC transports gain +2 def. That makes them a bit harder to kill, specially when you also get the HP upgrade for transports!

Btw, remember that a destroyer won't always get a roll of 9 attack damage.

I'm just going to assume that you thought I was a moron because I only have 22 posts. What I meant was "why do my transports die when I use them to attack enemy cities, despite the fact that they have more health than the units that they are transporting?"

That's not what I thought at all...
And as to your question, the answer remains the same. They just can't cause enough damage to their attackers before they are destroyed.
In real life, a C-130J Super Hercules Transport Plane is hardly more powerful than the tanks and humvees it carries...its not even armed! Similarly atWar transports can't hope to defeat other units, or 1 versus 1 (with luck) against a single militia.
I'm sorry if in my previous message (or even this one!) I came off as condescending. Its an unconscious bad habit, and I'm hoping to break out of it.

You weren't being condescending, it's just that the att/def system is one of the easiest things to understand in AtWar. Does the low attack make the transports a priority target for damage allocation, though? I would have thought that they would take less damage if they have less attack, since they wouldn't be the chief attackers.

EDIT: Just found out that AtWar doesn't have spoilers :/

The transport is always attacked by enemies before the units it carries (naval, air, subs) and it always attacks targets after the units it carries. If a transport is sunk, the units in it are destroyed. If you're asking why this is so, then the only answer I can give is Game Mechanic and Real Life. Building on the C-130J analogy above, an antiaircraft missile will destroy the C-130J and not the tanks inside. They'll be destroyed when the plane crashes.
If I've still not answered your question, then I'm sorry, ignore me, I'm a dork

Most forums have a feature in the coding that lets you hide certain parts of text so that people don't have stories "spoiled" by knowing twists and stuff that might be in them. You can show the text by clicking on a button that says "spoiler". I usually use this for when lines of quote are getting exceptionally long (like ours did).

Yeah, most of the time, it's only good for making walls of text more appealing, since it makes them more organized and less intimidating.
